The freight recession is ending — but not the way most people expected. Truckload spot rates entered the second half of 2026 running roughly 60% above year-ago levels, while shipment volumes remain soft. The mid-2026 freight data tells a consistent story across every major source:

  • Spot rates are up ~60% year over year entering H2 2026, after bottoming near $1.65/mile in late 2025 and climbing past $2.00/mile by February (Transportation Insight; U.S. Bank/DAT).

The mechanism is simple. Two-plus years of suppressed rates forced small carriers and owner-operators out of the market throughout 2025. Fewer trucks means less competition for every load. Demand didn't come roaring back — capacity left, and rates followed.

Why is this recovery different from past cycles?

Previous freight recoveries were demand-driven: volumes surged, trucks filled up, and rates rose because shippers were competing for space. This one inverts the logic, and that changes the playbook in three ways.
