Landstar reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $1.512 billion, up 25%, and insurance and claims costs of $55.3 million against $33.0 million a year earlier (Landstar 8-K exhibit, Oct 27, 2026). That is a 68% increase in insurance and claims cost on 25% revenue growth. Working from those figures, insurance and claims went from roughly 2.7% of revenue to about 3.7%.
The filing does not tell outsiders which claims drove the increase, and this is not a comment on Landstar's operations. It is a reminder to every broker and carrier that claims costs can move faster than the business, and that the part of claims cost you control most directly is the quality of your evidence.
A claim is an argument about what happened, settled by whoever has better records. For cargo claims, the question is usually where damage, shortage or temperature loss occurred and whether it was noted at the time. For liability claims, it is often whether the carrier was properly selected. Either way, the outcome depends on documents created when events happened, not reconstructed later.
The core records:
A POD signed clean is strong evidence the freight arrived in good condition. A POD noting "3 cartons crushed" with photos attached settles where the damage was found. A missing POD leaves everyone guessing.
The documents exist in theory. In practice:
By then the driver does not remember the stop and the receiver's dock staff has changed. A file that would have taken five minutes to build on delivery day takes hours to reconstruct, and it is weaker.
Agents build the claims file at delivery by requesting each record the moment the event happens, checking that it is complete and readable, and attaching it to the load in your TMS. When a claim arrives months later, the file is already there.
For reefer loads, the temperature record is the most important part of the file, which we covered in our post on holiday reefer season temperature checks and exception alerts.
Yes, though the documents differ. Cargo claims hinge on condition records. Liability claims after an accident, where a broker may be named, tend to turn on how the carrier was selected and what the broker knew at the time. Large jury verdicts have made this a bigger concern for brokers, a trend we examined in our analysis of nuclear verdicts and the broker litigation surge. The defense starts with a carrier vetting record saved for every load: authority, insurance, safety data and the date each was checked. We laid out that practice in our guide to carrier selection documentation as a defense.
Those records matter at renewal too. Insurers price on loss history and on how well a broker manages risk, and consistent documentation is one of the few levers a broker controls. That ties to what we covered in our post on freight broker liability insurance premiums in 2026.
Landstar reported $55.3 million in insurance and claims costs for Q3 2026, compared with $33.0 million a year earlier, an increase of about 68% (Landstar 8-K exhibit, Oct 27, 2026).
The POD with any exceptions noted, OS&D photos, seal numbers, temperature records for reefer loads, check-call logs and timestamps for each stage of the trip.
At the time of each event: pickup, check calls and delivery. Documentation gathered when the claim arrives, often months later, is harder to get and less persuasive.
They can collect and file the evidence per load as it happens, match incoming claims to loads and assemble the file for review. The decision on how to respond stays with your team.
Claims costs can rise faster than revenue, as Landstar's third quarter shows. You cannot control every accident or damaged pallet, but you can control your evidence. Collect PODs, exception photos, seal numbers, temperatures and check-call logs when they happen, attach them to the load, and the claim that arrives months later meets a finished file.
