USPS said on October 22 that it is prepared for the 2026 holiday season, with more than 600 package sorting machines deployed (USPS newsroom, Oct 22, 2026). The sorting capacity is there. Whether your parcels get into it on time depends on the middle mile: the truckloads that carry pre-sorted parcels into postal facilities and carrier hubs, each one tied to an appointment window. Miss that window in December and the parcels on that trailer can slide a day or more, sometimes into a more expensive surcharge week and sometimes past a customer's delivery promise.
This post is for brokers, 3PLs and fulfillment operators who move injection freight: zone-skip loads, drop shipments into USPS facilities and linehaul into parcel carrier hubs. The work is not complicated. It is a lot of appointments, each with its own rules, and peak is when they are hardest to get and easiest to lose.
Injection means delivering parcels in bulk, usually palletized or in gaylords, to a facility deeper in the carrier's network instead of handing them over at origin. Shippers and consolidators do it to cut zone charges and transit days. USPS drop shipments are scheduled through its FAST appointment system. Parcel carrier hubs and large retailer DCs run their own appointment processes, often by email or portal.
Every one of those facilities manages dock doors and labor against a schedule. At peak they run near capacity, so the appointment is the contract. Arrive on time with the right paperwork and the freight gets worked. Arrive late, or without a confirmed slot, and you may wait, get turned away or be pushed to the next open window, which can be a day or two out.
FedEx's highest peak-surcharge window for 2026 runs from November 23 to December 27 (Supply Chain Dive, Jul 2026). Peak surcharges are tied to ship dates, so the cost of a slipped injection is not only detention and a frustrated driver. A trailer that was meant to induct parcels before a pricing break, and instead inducts after it, can move the shipper's volume into a costlier window. We covered how shippers are adjusting carrier mix around these windows in our breakdown of UPS and FedEx peak surcharges and carrier selection for 2026.
There is also a service cost. Parcels that induct a day late reach the last mile a day late. That is where delivery promises break and where support tickets pile up, a pattern we looked at in our post on how AI reduces failed last-mile deliveries.
Most of these are communication failures, not capacity failures. Someone needed to send an email, read a reply or update a record, and it did not happen in time.
Agents handle injection scheduling by treating every appointment as a small, tracked task: request the slot as soon as the load is built, confirm it in writing, check that load details match, watch the truck's ETA against the window and rebook before the window is lost rather than after. A person steps in only when a facility refuses or no slot is available.
This is the same pattern we described for warehouses in our guide to dock appointment scheduling with AI agents, and for ports in our look at Long Beach's new night and Saturday gates. Extra capacity, whether gate hours or sorting machines, only helps freight that holds a confirmed slot.
The most expensive FedEx window opens on November 23. Before then:
It is a scheduled delivery slot at a postal facility for bulk parcels or mail delivered by a shipper or consolidator. USPS manages these appointments through its FAST scheduling system.
Facilities run near capacity, so open slots are scarce. A missed window can push freight back a day or more, which can delay delivery and, depending on dates, move parcels into a higher surcharge period.
November 23 to December 27, 2026, according to Supply Chain Dive's July 2026 coverage.
Yes, within the rules you set. It can request a new slot when the ETA shows the truck will miss the window, then notify the shipper and carrier. Anything it cannot resolve goes to a person.
USPS and the parcel carriers have built for peak. For many shippers the bottleneck will be the middle mile: appointments requested late, never confirmed or not rebooked when a truck slips. Treat every injection appointment as a tracked task with a deadline, and let agents do the requesting, confirming and rebooking so your team handles only the exceptions.
